5 Ways to Protect Your Jewelry On Vacation

By June 10, 2014 No Comments

protect jewelry in a hotel safeIt’s time to take that dream vacation and you know your inner fashionista wants to bring along at least a few pieces of bling, but how do you make sure your favorite jewelry pieces stay safe and secure during your travels? If we could give you a travel size Casoro jewelry safe, believe us we would! Unfortunately though, even if it existed, it would be way too heavy to haul through the airport security line. So instead, we have put together a list of essential travel tips to help keep your favorite jewelry pieces safe and in pristine condition throughout your vacation and until you return home.

#1 – Make a List

Before leaving on vacation, take the time to document all of the valuable jewelry pieces you will bring with you on your trip. If you want to go the extra mile, snap a few quick photos or a video. Make sure you bring this list with you (maybe snap a photo of the list as well, in case you misplace the paper version). This will be helpful in keeping track of everything you brought with you, so you don’t leave anything valuable behind. Be sure to check your list before checking out of the hotel! Your list will also help you for insurance purposes; if something happens to your jewelry, you can easily provide proof of any lost or damaged items.

#2 – Always Choose Carry On

We’re sure you’ve heard it before, but to be safe, always tuck your valuable jewelry inside your zippered carry on. Never pack valuables in your checked luggage; your jewelry should be kept as near to you as possible. It’s also important to properly pack your jewelry pieces inside your carry on, in order to ensure your jewelry is in tip-top shape when you arrive to your destination. No one wants to end up with a tangled mass of necklaces. To avoid this, make sure to pack each piece separately in its own soft cloth pouch or in a special travel jewelry organizer. Some stones like diamonds can also scratch softer ones like pearls, so packing pieces separately is key to preserving your jewelry’s quality.

#3 – Use the Hotel Safe

If you are wary about using your hotel room’s safe, know that your valuables are safer there than not inside your safe. Yes, hotel safe break-ins do occasionally happen, but there are precautions you can take, such as: changing your safe combination daily, always memorizing the combinations, and never writing them down. Also, keep your list with you (the one you made from Tip #1); you don’t want everyone to know what’s stashed inside your safe.

#4 – Resist Sporting Your Bling at the Pool

As great as you’ll look tanning while wearing those diamond earrings, chlorine from the pool can cause discoloration in precious metals and possibly structural damage as well, so try to resist. Also, if you’re swimming in the ocean or the pool, your fingers will naturally shrink because of the temperature, and you don’t want your rings to slip off and be lost forever. Our advice is to leave all jewelry in the hotel room safe during water excursions, or any adventurous excursions for that matter!

#5 – Check Your Insurance Policy

To insure is to ensure peace of mind. Even if you’re confident your jewelry is insured already, if you’re traveling outside the country, you should confirm that your insurance will still cover your pieces. Also bear in mind, that jewelry tends to increase in value over time. If you have not recently taken your jewels in to be appraised, do so before your vacation and make sure they are insured at the proper amount. You wouldn’t want to lose some of your jewelry’s replacement value if loss or theft were to happen.

We hope these tips help you protect your jewelry while on vacation this year. You can check out more tips on how to protect your jewelry here.
